Assault courses used to be solely associated with the Military getting their recruits fit for battle. Then in 1987 a light bulb moment happened which changed the course (excuse the pun!) of sport and fitness whereby it was introduced to the general public as an Obstacle Race. The rest, as they say, is history with practically a race/event on every weekend around the country if not the world.
Obstacle Course RACING is exactly that, a race in which competitors race (sometimes for prize money) and overcome various physical challenges that are in the form of obstacles. Competitors are timed and held to a strict standard of performance, and when a task cannot be completed, penalty exercises like Burpees are assigned.
Obstacle Course EVENTS (fun runs) like Muddy Mayhem, on the other hand, are not competitive and participants are free to take an easier route or skip certain challenges as they please. The appeal of these type of events is the camaraderie and it’s non-competitive nature where your fellow mud lover will help you with the obstacles should you need it.
RACES and EVENTS vary both in distances (from 5Km to 22Km+) and difficulty levels (Pretty Muddy to Spartan). The idea behind them all is to test endurance, strength, speed, dexterity and balance although for some it may well be a challenge of the mind as well! People can run by themselves, with friends or as a team. They’re also a great way to raise money for charity, clubs or other good causes.
Many obstacles are similar to those used in the military while others are unique. Obstacles can include but are not limited to – climbing over walls, carrying heavy objects, crossing bodies of water, wading through mud (a lot!), crawling under nets etc. Organisers are always looking for fun or fiendish ways to keep you challenged and entertained!
Muddy Mayhem is an Obstacle EVENT (fun run) which combines the principles of obstacles, mud and fun – a winning combination which we’re sure you’ll enjoy. Why not do it in fancy dress for even more of a laugh?!
